AS you might have read about in the ECHO, we joined forces with our neighbours GRC Accountants to transform the CEJ office into a mini-football stadium to watch Liverpool play Sevilla in Wednesday night’s Europa League final, dubbing it “The Spying Klopp”!*
Reds season ticket holder Bryan came up with the idea alongside his fellow Red, GRC’s Gareth Cooper, shipping in fake grass, stadium-style seating and even a smoke machine.
Unfortunately, the raucous encouragement being belted out from the West Kirby branch of the LFC supporters’ club was not enough to spur the Reds on to their first European trophy since 2005.
After Daniel Sturridge’s first half wonder goal the atmosphere and the optimism was sky high, and it looked like Jurgen Klopp’s first season at Anfield would be ending with silverware, but three goals from the Spanish side in the second 45 minutes meant the Spaniards took home the trophy for a record-breaking third year on the trot.
Bryan said: “We couldn’t get tickets to travel to Basel so we thought it would be a great idea to do something a bit special in the office. Unfortunately it was not to be but with pizza from Andre’s down the road and enough beers to go around we had a great night anyway.
“The only drawback is, Jo wants to hold a Strictly party here later this year now. I’m not so sure about that!”
*Liverpool FC’s legendary Kop end, behind one of the goals at Anfield, was christened The Spion Kop by Liverpool ECHO sports editor Ernest Edwards in 1906, in honour of the of the many Merseysiders who died vainly in 1900 during the Battle of Spion Kop in the Second Boer War.
